The Road
"Like the dying world the newly blind inhibit, all of it slowly fading from memory." (Page 18, McCarthy)
The world has changed dramatically in the post apocalyptic era they live in. The majestic buildings and beautiful rolling meadows have been reduced to ruins and scorched land. Some are luckier than others in the fact that they still have the memories they acquired through years of living in the previous world, others, however, have been born into nothing but the need for survival and the treacherous conditions the cold world has left behind. Even those that have that faint recollection of a better, previous life have noticed their recollections fading away into nothing.
By observing real life, followed by comparing and contrasting it to the post-apocalyptic setting of "The Road", one can better understand the situation the survivors have been placed in. Even in the last ten years, the human race has made huge leaps in science and technology. By buying and relying on the newest and latest technology, society is forgetting about how everyday tasks needed to be completed. Even older members of communities around the world are investing in new phones, machines, gadgets, and other allied paraphernalia that result in faded memories. While this connection is nowhere near as extreme as the case the survivors have to deal with, it is still evident that our previous civilization is being replaced and forgotten by the newer generations of the human race.
